Pros & Cons

  • Flexible working conditions and a supportive team that values your growth.
  • Great flexibility and work environment. Fun and interesting work.
  • Everyone is treated as equal here, and teamwork and cooperation are two of the best parts of working at Leidos. Everyone is rather friendly.
  • My team is always around to support me if I have any questions, and they have also taught me to tackle problems from different angles to have the best possible solution.
  • I like that the work has a world impact regarding Australia's safety. Day to day, I do tickets (agile project management methodology) where I complete development for a web app. This involves frontend and backend bug fixes and features. I like it, it's quite fun.
  • Mainly just the salary and inability to gain bonuses despite performance.
  • Not many day-to-day opportunities to talk to people in the office outside of your team.
  • Defence has some security implications that affect how you work.
  • Intern pay seems low.
  • None of the perks is that interesting. They are all normal things you would expect from any modern-day corporate environment.

As an intern while still doing uni, this role is ideal as I have been told that it's likely that after my internship year, I will get to stay on as a casual while completing my degree and then become a full-time team member afterwards. Every week, there are emails sent out about different positions you can do, so you can continue to grow.

The office has everything needed for my role, a double monitor setup, meeting rooms, toilets, and a kitchen with all the amenities you would need. It is, however, a little small and is sometimes hard to get a seat on busy days. The dress code for the most part is very relaxed; you can pretty much wear anything as long as it's somewhat smart casual. However, if you are meeting with clients, you are expected to dress up a little more.

I am happy with the pay for my position and the type of work that I get to do. Working at Leidos gives you access to a lot of discounts on different gift cards, which is nice.

Going from uni into working at Leidos, I feel that within the first week, everything I had learnt at Leidos had eclipsed what I had been taught at uni for the last 2 years. I have been taught so much through working at Leidos so far. The main ways I have learnt new skills are through being put onto a task and then given time to discuss with the rest of my team how I would go about solving the problem, and looking up the documentation of the technology required to accomplish this. My team is always around to support me if I have any questions, and they have also taught me to tackle problems from different angles to have the best possible solution.

One of the best parts of working at Leidos is the flexibility. You are allowed to work whenever you want as long as you turn up to all required meetings and fulfil your required hours for the week. Working arrangements are very team dependent; however, in my team, I can choose to work from home whenever I choose or go into an office and work.
