About McKinsey & Company

Since the company's formation in 1926, McKinsey has operated as a single global partnership united by a strong set of values and the drive to deliver positive, enduring change. Today, McKinsey continues to combine bold strategies and transformative technologies to support organizations to innovate more sustainably, achieve lasting gains in performance, and build workforces that will thrive for this generation and the next. McKinsey serves as a lead partner of the Mission Possible Partnership, a coalition addressing one of the toughest challenges in climate change, decarbonizing seven of the world’s hardest-to-abate sectors by 2050.

Your Role

  • You’ll work in teams of typically 3 to 5 Consultants, playing an active role in all aspects of the engagement.
  • Gathering and analyzing information, formulating and testing hypotheses, and developing and communicating recommendations.
  • Serving clients as well as helping to build McKinsey’s internal knowledge and capabilities.
  • Specific work may include interviewing stakeholders and experts, leading teams, building financial models, creating and delivering presentations, and working with McKinsey subject experts to develop perspectives and insights.
  • You’ll participate in several social activities throughout the summer to help you get to know the firm culture and interact with other summer interns.

Training, Development & Rotations

McKinsey believes in strengths-based development and coaching, and you’ll receive frequent mentoring from colleagues. This will include a senior colleague from your office or practice who will help you grow and achieve your career goals. Additionally, you will have a professional development manager who manages staffing to help you choose projects based on your priorities as well as the needs of client service teams. McKinsey, most are initially broad in their focus, meaning they do not need specific industry or functional expertise to be successful.

Salary & Benefits

Depending on the division you are working at McKinsey, competitive salaries and attractive benefits packages are offered. You may be eligible to receive a bonus that is typically paid once a year and is calculated based on your year-end performance rating. Employees can earn additional compensation and benefits, which include health and life insurance, mental health care, health, retiree and saving accounts, family and parenting programs, vacation and time-off, free food packs, tuition assistance, and job training. This role's annual compensation ranges from approximately $113,000 to $191,000.

Career Progression

McKinsey offers an opportunity beyond consulting, such as tech roles, Client Capability Network Roles, or in their broad internal roles. McKinsey has both formal and informal processes to help support you, such as a training program designed exclusively for recruits and experienced professional hires where you can meet McKinsey people from all over the world. McKinsey promotes consultants based on their potential, and there are no restrictions on the number of promotions or being elected to firm partner. McKinsey's mentorship model creates a culture in which every member is invested in the success of others. You’ll be challenged to broaden your skill set and step into leadership positions. The environment can be intense, but you won’t compete with other consultants.

Work-Life Balance

McKinsey offers an innovative range of flexible, part-time programs for all consultants that are compatible with career success. Flexibility programs are individually tailored at all tenure levels and may have short or long-term duration. At McKinsey, flexibility is defined broadly and includes part-time programs, reduced days per week or hours per day, extended time off between projects, a formal program of mentorship, and workload adjustment for consultants about to leave for or return from leaves of absence, typically parental leave. Options for consultants to stay in their current role longer, thus reducing the pressure to fulfill requirements for the next role.

Culture & Vibe

McKinsey is known to have a flat hierarchy in its structure, with each member assigned as a mentor. The company is also popular with its tight competitiveness among its employees, whereby graduates and interns are guaranteed to have the most challenging workload and environment to learn and prove themselves stand out from each other. McKinsey is recognized as the most prestigious and most trusted management consulting company. Since they often hire graduates from top business schools, it is also guaranteed that McKinsey has the best mentors in its expertise; graduates and interns will get many chances to be involved in interesting cases and engaging learning experiences.
