Join Sargent & Lundy as a Grid Interconnection Consulting Intern to support utility planning and advisory projects in a dynamic consulting environment.
Your Role
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborate with the Consulting Business Group and expand academic knowledge in Engineering.
- Prepare new generator interconnection applications, including conceptual single line diagrams, reactive power compliance verification, and PSS/E model development.
- Review ISO feasibility and system impact studies to guide ISO Interconnection Customers.
- Perform independent power system studies, focusing on thermal and voltage contingency analyses for generator interconnection planning.
- Conduct advanced grid system studies evaluating scenarios such as increased renewable penetration, unit retirements, and transmission alternatives.
- Support due diligence for power generation and system planning projects and feasibility studies.
- Track and evaluate project activities, progress, and associated data.
- Prepare technical reports, conceptual designs, and specifications for Consulting deliverables.
- Provide technical support to clients.
About You
The company is looking for:
- Pursuing a BS or MS in Electrical Engineering with strong academic background and coursework emphasis in Power Systems Analysis, with at least six semesters or equivalent quarters completed at an accredited university.
- Minimum overall GPA of at least 3.0.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience in writing technical reports and proposals.
- Solid interpersonal skills and ability to work with and guide others.
- Project planning and leadership skills.
- Preferred but not required: knowledge of power regions and ISOs/RTOs (PJM, MISO, NYISO, ERCOT, SPP, CAISO, ISO-NE).
- Preferred but not required: experience modeling inverter-based resources and renewable generation (WTG, PV, BESS, hybrid generation) and associated collector systems using PSS/E, PSLF, and/or PSCAD.
- Preferred but not required: experience using transmission planning software, particularly PSS/E and TARA, for load flow modeling and contingency studies.
- Preferred but not required: experience with dynamic transient, stability, and advanced studies in EMTP-RV or PSCAD.
