The Australian Government is seeking recent university graduates to join the 2026 Australian Government Graduate program - Data Stream.

There are lots of roles on offer including Data Scientists.

Roles filled through the Data Scientist stream include Applied Data Scientists, Data Science Developers and Data Modellers. Data Scientists apply advanced analytics techniques and scientific principles to extract valuable information from data for business decision-making, strategic planning and other uses.

Qualifications and Experience 

Data Scientist candidates must have either:

  • qualification/s in data science, statistics, computer science, mathematics, actuarial studies, physics, engineering, economics, econometrics, OR
  • have qualification/s in any other disciplines with a strong quantitative component.

What is the Australian Government Graduate Program - Data Stream?

The Australian Government Graduate Program (AGGP) - Data Stream is a program offering recent graduates permanent employment across the Australian Government. The Data Stream is led by the Australian Bureau of Statistics who recruit for data roles on behalf of over 35 Australian Government and Commonwealth agencies across Australia. There will be about 200 positions across the participating agencies. 

Are you eligible?

In addition to the qualifications required above, to be eligible you must:

  • be an Australian citizen at the time of application
  • have completed at least an Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7 qualification (a Bachelor degree), or higher equivalent by 31 December 2025
  • have completed your most recent, eligible qualification between 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2025
  • be able to obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance if required
  • be willing to undergo any police, character, health or other checks required.

Pros

  • Everyone is friendly and approachable.

  • You are given a lot of support and guidance.

  • Plenty of learning and development opportunities.

  • Exposure to a wide range of projects.

  • Good work-life balance with flexible hours.

Cons

    • The work can be quite demanding at times.

    • Early on there are plenty of opportunities at the APS 4 & 5 to get experience in different team and progress. APS 6 and onward the opportunities become very limited.

    • Some processes are a bit bureaucratic.

    • The pace of work can sometimes be slow.

    • Some office locations are not very convenient.
